Chciałabym śnić. Chciałabym, żeby to był tylko sen, zwykła mara, która nachodzi niespodziewanie, wywołuje dreszcze i strach, ale za jednym otwarciem oczu znika i odchodzi w zapomnienie. To koszmar. Kropka. To na szczęście nie rzeczywistość, bo jeśli tak by wyglądała, wolałabym nigdy się nie obudzić.

Jednak, mimo najgłębszej nadziei w ludzkie dobro i ludzką zdolność do mądrych wyborów, zbijam się z realiami, w których wizja pozbawionego humanizmu przywódcy, mającego w swoich rękach kontrolę nad losami naprawdę całego świata i z trwogą dla obserwatorów zapowiadającego istny pogrom, niedawno stała się prawdą. W kraju o tak zróżnicowanej społeczności, bogatej kulturze i życiodajnemu środowisku władzę objął niedawno „Trump Tropików”- Jair Messias Bolsonaro. Witamy w Brazylii.

Jair Bolsonaro jest brazylijskim politykiem, emerytowanym żołnierzem, członkiem konserwatywnej Partii Socjalliberalnej (Partido Social Liberal), a od 1 stycznia 2019 roku 38.  prezydentem Brazylii. Głośno i wyraźnie popiera Wojskową Juntę Brazylijską, dawną dyktaturę wojskową z lat 1964-1985. Jest również zwolennikiem Augusto Pinocheta, chilijskiego dyktatora, o którym wypowiada się, że powinien zamordować wręcz więcej ludzi [Veja, December 2, 1998]. Jest niczym niewiarygodna i absurdalna skrajność, jednak w październikowych wyborach otrzymał aż 55,2% głosów w drugiej turze.

Swój sukces może zawdzięczyć wyciągnięciu z ludzi na wierzch goryczy i złości na rząd, który jak to zawsze bywa „nie dba o interesy obywateli”. Jak pisze hiszpański El Pais: „Historia ta sprowadza się do emocji, w szczególności strachu i nienawiści, które są o wiele silniejsze niż jakakolwiek platforma polityczna.” Tak jak w Europie elity są obwiniane za kryzys ekonomiczny i stopniowy spadek poziomu życia, tak w Ameryce Południowej zarzuca się przewodzącym klasom politycznym upadek brazylijskich instytucji i szeroką korupcję. Jest kolejnym politykiem, któremu udało się sięgnąć po ogromną władzę na ostatniej fali populizmu, która przemierzyła już Stany Zjednoczone, Turcję, Węgry, Polskę, Francję. Brazylijczycy w gniewie domagali się zmian w kraju i obalenia socjalistycznego establishmentu, który nie daje im perspektyw na przyszłość. To, że osoba szerząca demagogiczne obietnice zmian jednocześnie popiera tortury, nazywa rdzenną ludność Amazonii zwierzętami, wolałby by jego syn był uzależniony od narkotyków lub zmarł w wypadku samochodowym niż był gejem, uważa posiadanie córki za „słabość” a Afro-amerykanów za ludzi „tłustych i leniwych”, w jakiś sposób uszło dotychczas bokiem.

Jednakże to, co najbardziej niepokoi nas, społeczność globalną, to plany Bolsonaro wobec lasu Amazońskiego. Lasy deszczowe, nazywane często „płucami Ziemi” dzięki pochłanianiu olbrzymich ilości dwutlenku węgla z atmosfery, mogą zmierzyć się niedługo z najpoważniejszą tragedią. Bolsonaro podpisał niedawno pierwszy dekret, który zmienia regulacje rezerwatów chroniących rdzenne ludy i oddaje lasy deszczowe w ręce Ministerstwa Rolnictwa. Ministerstwa, które jest kontrolowane przez lobbying agrobiznesów. Polityka Bolsonaro oznacza, że wkrótce zielone, dzikie obszary zamienią się w połacie soi, pastwiska dla krów, kopalnie i  autostrady. Wybór, jakiego dokonali Brazylijczycy, zapowiada poważny atak na ludność autochtoniczną, lecz co ważniejsze – podniesie zmiany klimatyczne na wyższy poziom. Bez Amazonii dwutlenek węgla i metan nie zostaną z atmosfery zabrane, przez co ocieplenie przyniesie nam coraz bardziej dramatyczne skutki.

Demokracja, której Jair Bolsonaro chce się wyzbyć z Brazylii, dała ludziom głos i możliwość zadecydowania od swoim losie. Teraz nasz głos i szansa na podjęcie decyzji, które mogą uratować planetę, może być już nieważny. Cytując brazylijską dziennikarkę, Eliane Brum, „Jeśli mesjanistyczny kapitalizm Bolsonaro nie zostanie powstrzymany, życie na tej planecie będzie o wiele gorsze dla wszystkich.” Dla ludów tubylczych, dla Brazylijczyków, dla Europejczyków i dla samego Bolsonaro też.

I would like to dream. I would like it to be just a dream, an ordinary mara, which comes unexpectedly, evokes shivers and dread, but with one opening of eyes it disappears and goes into oblivion. It is a nightmare. Dot. Fortunately, this is not reality, becauseif it looked like that, I would prefer never to wake up. 

However, despite the deepest hope in the human good and human ability to make wise choices, I face the realities in which the vision of a leader without humanism, who has control over the fate of the whole world in his own hands for fear of the observers announcing averitable pogrom, has recently become true. In a country with such a diverse community, rich culture and life-giving environment, poewer has been recently assumed by the "Trump of Tropics" - Jais Messias Bolsonaro. Welcome to Brazil. 
Jair Bolsonaro is a Brazilian politician, a retired soldier, a member of the conservative Social Liberal Party and, since 1 January 2019, the 38th President of Brazil. He is a loud and clear supporter of the Brazilian Military Junta, a former military dictatorship from 1964-1985. He is also a supporter of Augusto Pinochet, a Chilean dictatorabout whom he says that should murder even more people [Veja, December 2, 1998]. It is an unbelievable and absurd extremity, but in the October elections it received as many as 55. 2% of the votes in the second round presidential elections.

His success can be attributed to getting out of the people the bitterness and anger with the government, which, as it always happens, "does not care about the interests of citizens". As El Pais writes: "This story goes down to emotions, fear and hatred in particular, which are much stronger than any political platform." Just as the elites in Europe are blamed for the economic crisis and the gradual decline in living standards, so in South America the leading political classes are accused of the collapse of Brazilian institutions and widespread corruption. He is another politician who managed to reach for a huge power on the last wave of populism, which has already travelled through the United States, Turkey, Hungary, Poland, France. The Brazilians in resentment  demanded change in the country and the overthrow of the socialist establishment, which did not give them any prospects for the future. The fact that a person spreading demagogic promises of change at the same time supports torture, calls the Amazon's indigenous people animals, would prefer his son to be addicted to drugs or die in a car accident rather than being gay, considers having a daughter to be a „weakness” and Afro-Americans to be „fat and lazy", has somehow escaped sideways.
However, what worries us most, the global community, is Bolsonro's plans for the Amazon forest. Rainforests, often referred to as the „lungs of the Earth"; due to the absorption of huge amounts of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, may soon face the most serious tragedy. Bolsonaro recently signed the first decree, which changes the regulations of reserves protecting indigenous peoples and puts rainforests in the hands of the Ministry of Agriculture. The Ministry, which is controlled by agribusiness lobbying. Bolsonaro's policy means that soon green, wild areas will turn into soya plantations, cow pastures, mines and motorways. The choice made by the Brazilians heralds a serious attack on indigenous peoples, but more importantly, it will raise climate change to a higher level. Without the Amazon, carbon dioxid eand methane will not be taken away from the atmosphere, and warming will have increasingly dramatic consequences for us.
The democracy that Jair Bolsonaro wants to get rid of from Brazil has given people a voice and an opportunity to decide on their own destiny. Now our voice and the chance to make decisions that can save the planet may no longer be valid. To quote the Brazilian journalist, Eliane Brum, „If the messianic capitalism of Bolsonro is not stopped, life on this planet will be much worse for everyone”. For indigenous peoples, for Brazilians, for Europeans and for Bolsonaro himself.
